Birth control pills are risky for Breast cancer
According to a study by the University of Oxford, UK, hormonal birth control pills carry the risk of breast cancer. Hormonal birth control pills slightly increase the risk of breast cancer, but the overall risk is low, university researchers say.
The study, published in the journal PLoS Medicine, found that progestin-hormone birth control increased the risk of breast cancer by 20-30 percent. Regardless of the method of delivery.
The researchers also found that 265 of every 100,000 pill users were at risk for those under 15 years of age.Researchers say the risk of breast cancer was lower before the use of contraceptives containing the hormones estrogen and progestogen. However, limited data are available on the effects of progestogen contraceptives.
However, a review of prescriptions in England has shown a significant increase in the use of progestogen-contraceptives in recent years.
Researchers reviewed primary data from the UK CPRD from 1996-2017 and found 9,498 cases of cancer in women under the age of 50. 18,171 women without breast cancer but affected by the control pill.
Researchers found that 39 percent of 44 percent of women diagnosed with breast cancer had prescribed hormonal contraceptives three years before diagnosis. For progestogen-only birth control pills, it's said to be half the prescription.
The study also says that birth control methods, whether the pill or the injection, carry the same amount of risk.
